Bodega Sommos Garnacha has long and well-established experience in the wine sector.
We are in Murero, a small village of 76 inhabitants on the banks of the river Jiloca, 10 km from Daroca. Set on the estate known as "Finca La Moratilla", it follows the concept of a French château, where our treasure is the vineyards.
We currently own around 100 hectares of vineyard, much of it old-vine Garnacha.
The winery combines simplicity, functionality and an austere style, avoiding extravagant design and focusing all attention on what really matters in a winery: the wine and its vines.
The winery was built with typical Aragonese materials: solid brick, ceramic stoneware, plaster ceilings and alabaster details. The stone entrance is a nod to the area's farmhouses.
Sommos Garnacha is a traditionally innovative winery.
The terroir
Terroir is not easy to define, but explaining it is essential to understanding our wines.
It is a specific place shaped by factors such as CLIMATE, VARIETY and SOIL, not forgetting CULTURAL factors, with human involvement throughout the winegrowing process.
Climate
The climate is continental, with extremely cold winters and hot summers. It is shaped by the macroclimate, which is geographical, regional and local, and influenced by latitude, longitude, orientation and altitude, which here ranges from 850 to 1,100 m. These are ideal conditions for vines, giving long growing periods and slow ripening.
The mesoclimate is made up of the conditions affecting the vineyard and its immediate surroundings. Average rainfall is 350–400 mm a year, concentrated in the peak growing period from April to July. Temperature, heat summation, sunshine hours, humidity and wind can vary from year to year, but are always shaped by the macroclimate.
Variety
Garnacha Tinta is regarded as the native variety in our area, so it is our duty to preserve and care for this unique heritage. Garnacha gives us the magic of producing completely different wines thanks to our varied terroirs.
- Terroir on grey slate
- Terroir on red slate
- Terroir on mixed grey slate and clay
Soil
Typical of Alpine uplifts, the vineyards lie mainly on quartzite and slate. Slate soils with moderate organic content and good aeration make up most of our vineyards, divided into red slate and grey slate.
Culture
Traditional viticulture is based on our ancestors' culture, in which nothing is dominant and nothing is essential, but everything is necessary. The generosity of the vineyard and the passion of people with their meticulous viticulture close the perfect circle of what is called terroir. Traditional, environmentally friendly farming practices, together with the absence of chemical fertilisers, insecticides and herbicides, are a must to sustain cultural tradition and sustainable cultivation.
