It is a special site with a clear vocation for vines, highly valued by growers for centuries and now set in a true sea of vineyards. Guillermo Eguren showed great patience here over many years, buying land from numerous growers until he had assembled a large 150-hectare property, which was consolidated and planted with vines between 1975 and 1985. In the 1989 family division it was split up again, and Guillermo Eguren kept the large El Puntido vineyard, which had once been divided among a hundred owners, along with the small neighbouring La Nieta and Carraleza vineyards.
Viñedos de Páganos was launched in 1998. The most suitable site was chosen, where the two narrow local roads from Laguardia and Páganos to Navaridas meet, and work began on digging underground cellars into the rock, following the pattern of classic 16th-century cellars but on a different scale: wide tunnels 5 metres high, 11 metres below ground, with a total length of 950 metres. These are magnificent ageing facilities, crowned by a winery that looks classic in its stone construction but is anything but conventional inside.
