Biodynamic winemaking
Reyneke, in Stellenbosch, is known in South Africa as the only certified biodynamic wine estate and for making some of the country's finest wines. The winery is part of the Vinimark Group and is run by Johan Reyneke and winemaker Rudiger Gretschel.
Its philosophy is to make quality organic wines without chemicals, with the utmost respect for nature and in partnership with it. Hence its motto, "The future lies right at the beginning", referring to times past when technology and chemicals had not yet reached the vineyard.
The team
Reyneke Wines is led by its owner, Johan Reyneke, and winemaker Rudiger Gretschel. Since the early 1990s Johan has been a
biodynamic pioneer, and he is now recognised worldwide for his sustainable approach to winegrowing and winemaking.
The winery
With biodynamic farming, the soil comes "alive". We let that energise the cellar.
Reyneke Wines aims to express the character of the grapes and so produce a wine that uniquely reflects its terroir.
The absence of artificial additives in the vineyard carries through into the cellar, where a non-interventionist approach is followed.
So you will not find commercially cultured yeasts or bacteria, acid adjustments or fermentation aids. Only natural solutions to natural challenges.
