The Schönleberfamily is behind Emrich-Schönleber wines. The Emrich family began growing vines in the area in the mid-18th century, on the steep hillsides of Monzingen.
Monzingen lies on the western edge of the Nahe growing region. The vineyards sit 160 to 250 metres above sea level, and a few kilometres to the north lies a large forest, the Soonwald, which shields the vineyards from Atlantic rain. It also brings cool summer nights, keeping acidity high in the grapes and ripening slow on the vine, which gives the wines great minerality.
The estate has around 20 hectares of vines in the area's most renowned sites, Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. Riesling makes up 85% of the plantings, and the remaining 15% are Pinot varieties: Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder.
