History
The history of Clos des Papes has been closely tied to the Avril family since the 18th century. The original plot was devastated by phylloxera in 1865. In 1896, Paul-Eugène Avril sold his Mourvèdre wine under the name Clos des Papes and helped create the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
His grandson Paul took over the Domaine in 1963 after studying oenology in Dijon, giving its wines an elegance reminiscent of Burgundy.
The vineyard
Clos des Papes wines are renowned for their consistency of style and quality, vintage after vintage. They come from 32 hectares of vines spread across more than twenty plots, among the best in the area, with a wide diversity of microclimates. The vines are around 80 years old and are farmed organically.
