It is one of the four estates ranked Premier Cru in the 1855 classification, and the only one outside the Médoc. It lies in Pessac, in the Graves area, very close to Bordeaux. Its red vineyards are planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and Cabernet Franc; its white varieties cover 3 hectares of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Many illustrious figures have praised the greatness of Château Haut-Brion's wines, including the British philosopher John Locke, Cardinal Richelieu, and Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States.
