History
Chantal and Jean Berthet-Bondet moved to Château-Chalon in 1984, and their first harvest took place in 1985.
Hélène, their elder daughter, turned to winegrowing in 2013 alongside her father, who handed over to her in 2018 when she became manager of the estate.
Like his wife, Chantal, Jean Berthet-Bondet did not come from an old winegrowing family. However, growers appeared among their ancestors: in the Languedoc on Chantal's side, and on Jean's side, a great-grandfather who worked for a time as a vineyard hand at Clos Vougeot.
The vineyards
The estate covers 15 hectares of vines: 4.5 hectares in the Château-Chalonappellation and 10.5 hectares in the Côtes du Jura appellation. Most of the vines were planted in the 1980s, with some younger plantings from the 1990s and 2000s.
The often steep vineyards need a great deal of care. Mechanisation is difficult, and much of the work must be done by hand. The estate converted to organic farming in 2010, which requires even more effort and attention to the soil and vines.
